Abstract

Chinese immigrants who arrived in Peru in the 19th century brought with them the practice of their traditional medicine. Chinese physicians faced epidemics and diseases in Lima and acquired recognition and prestige that earned them persecution and harassment by municipal and health authorities. Antonio Chaulón’s biography offers a glimpse into the practices, conflicts, roots and social ascent of Chinese doctors in Lima during the 19th century.
